Hyrox Explained: The Fitness Race Taking Over the World

22 July 2025

What is HYROX? | Why it's Taking Over The World Of Fitness

You’ve probably seen or heard the word “HYROX” being tossed around like a kettlebell lately. But what exactly is it? And why does it seem like everyone from elite athletes to everyday gym-goers is getting involved?

HYROX is more than just another fitness trend. It’s a global competition that’s reshaping how we think about endurance, strength, and functional fitness. HYROX is where racing meets functional fitness: clear, consistent and built for all levels. Unlike traditional races or obstacle courses, HYROX events follow an identical format, wherever they are in the world.

Our Co-Founder and Head of Train at SAINT Studios, Ryan Baronet, is here to break down what HYROX is. He’ll explain what makes it so addictive, and why it might be the next big challenge you didn’t know you needed. Discover HYROX and how to train for it at Saint Studios.

What is HYROX?

HYROX is a functional fitness race: 8 functional workout stations, broken up by 1km runs between each one. But what makes it special isn’t just the format - it’s the mindset and the movement it has created.

Think of HYROX as the world series of fitness racing. A global phenomenon that has taken gyms, athletes, and everyday movers by storm.

HYROX has a low barrier to entry - you don’t need to be an elite athlete, just someone willing to show up.

As Bill Bowerman (co-founder of Nike) famously said, “If you have a body, you’re an athlete.”

And that’s the spirit of HYROX: all it asks is that you bring your body, your mindset, and a willingness to push your limits - not for anyone else, but for yourself. Whether you’re chasing a personal best or just showing up for the challenge, you belong on the floor.

Why HYROX Is So Popular:

Low barrier to entry – just a willingness to show up ready to be challenged.

No time cap; Everyone finishes, whether it’s your first race or your 10th.

Community – Thousands of people doing the same challenge, cheering each other on, sharing the same burn.

It’s competitive for those who want it to be – but accessible for absolutely everyone.

Here’s how the standard race breaks down:

• 1 km Run
• Followed by 1 Functional Workout Station
• Repeat this pattern 8 times

That means you'll complete 8 km of running and 8 workout stations in total.

The workout stations typically include:
• 1,000m SkiErg
• 50m Sled Push
• 50m Sled Pull
• 80m Burpee Broad Jumps
• 1,000m Row
• 200m Farmers Carry
• 100m Sandbag Lunges
• 75 or 100 Wall Balls

Competitors can race solo or in doubles (same sex or mixed), making it a versatile challenge for different fitness goals.

HYROX is a global fitness race that combines running with functional workout stations. Think of it as a hybrid between a CrossFit competition and a distance race, but designed to be accessible to a broad range of fitness levels.

In short, If you love a challenge, love moving with others, and want to level up your fitness in a way that’s measurable, motivating, and seriously addictive – SAINT HYROX is calling. We’ll see you on the Train floor.
